本文主要讨论两个问题：一是对中国发展ＧＩＳ事业１５年的回顾，它在我国的开拓，几个时期的划分，不同时期的主要工作成就，希望引起讨论，以期对发展历程有一种共识。二是对当前中国ＧＩＳ发展的一些问题的思考，对本世纪最后五年工作的建议。

The paper outlines the development of GIS in China in the past 15 years, including differentiation and identification of different stages, main research and application work, main achievements and problems at different stages. Based on the fact of rapid development of GIS in China, which has the trend of industrialization, six main problems about the further development are discussed.1. The different stages of GIS development of China in the past 15 years are:(1) Preparation Stage (1978-1980) (2) Primary Stage (1980-1985) (3) Development Stage (1986-1995) A. Primary Development Phasc (1986-1990)B. Rapid Development Phase (1991-1995 )(4) Industrialization Stage (1996-)2. Consideration about further development of GIS in China includes,(1) Compile outlines of development strategy, set up plan for the whole country, establish system of theory and technology, make clear market orientation(2) Strengthen standardization and normalization (3) Set up systems which are very important for national economy and society (4) Promote the development of urban GIS (UGIS)(5 ) Set up strategies of developing domestic GIS software(6) Set up concerned policies and regulations
