山西新生代晚期的沉积历史先后经过了数十年的研究。关於沉积时代方面,陆续地经过了三门系中厚壳蚌的发现,周口店沉积的发现,泥河湾盆地的研究,太谷盆地的研究等,使我们对于华北的沉积历史有了比较完整的认识。

The region under consideration lies west of the Lu-liang Shan and east of the gorge of the Yellow River (Fig. 17). As a result of much intensive work done duung the past thirty years by Andersson, Barbour, Bien, Licent, Pei, Teilhairl de Chardin, Yang and others, the stratigraphy of the Late Cenozoic Yeuud in this mgion seems to be reasonably well established. In consideration of the erosional and depositional history of Shansi and its neighbouring provinces of North China, different "Stages" have been proposed.
