自然科学研究,多半在实验室,地理学研究的对象是地面现象,所以它的实验室就在野外。研究地理的人要注重野外考察,就是这个道理。但是,野外考察的实行,在现在的中国,往常有两种重大的困难:第一,中国内地各区缺乏精确的地图,观察地形和记载地面现象许多工作,都失其依据。要学地理的人。在考察途中临时测绘地图,非特时间上不经济,而且会妨碍他的主要观察工作。第二个困难是考察经费的不易筹集。

The author made a short visit to the Omei-shan during the summer 1940in the company of a group of his fourteen students in an excursion organgizedby the Geographical Department of the National Central University, Chungking, with a pitiful sum of fund. The fund available was so small indeed that it limited, much as against his desire, the time of his staying in the mountain to only five days. Thanks' to the fine weather and the effective cooperation of his students, he has however, succeeded in snaking in making two regional diagrams and two sltetclies etc., as represented herewith in the Chinese text.
