Land is a resource on which human depends for existence and development, and its quality is decided by its resource structure. This paper takes the arid area in Ningxia and Gansu Pro-vinces as a case and approaches a subject from classification and function of land resource structure. It is pointed out in this paper that there are six basic types of land resource structure, and that different structure types have different functions.

Using a two-dimensional β-mesoscale model, the numerical experiment about the influ-ence of inhomogeneous surface on the boundary-layer climate in summer was carried out in order to explore the reduction of droughts over the inhomogeneous underlying surface, which is consisted as forest and arid/wet bare land in the semi-arid region of North China (around 39°N, 100°E).
