As early as 900 years ago the investigation of karst mountains began in this country; and a list of their major types, scientifically designated, could be found in "Hsu Hsia Ke's Travels" (徐霞客游祀)written 300 years ago. The karst mountain patterns were classified into three major types. The authors of the present article classify the karst mountains of our tropic region as follows:1. karst mountain pattern of group of peaks and U-shape valley; 2. karst mountain pattern of forest of peaks and U-shape valley; 3. karst mountain pattern of group of peaks, with blind valley and karst basin; 4. karst mountain pattern of forest of rocky monadnoek and rolling hills, In the present article, a detailed analysis is liven of the sub-types of each of the basic geomor-phological units. In addition to the formation conditions, the environmental characteristics such as hydrographical conditions, climatic conditions etc., are also analysed. It is, in fact, a compre-hensive description of the geographical environment of karst mountain patterns.
